Day 10: Lunch At The Steps Of Grande Arche

Labels: , , | 0 comments»

When i did my post on A Little Tour Around Our Neighbourhood, i purposely did not mention a very important monument in Paris, La Grande Arche. Because Shah and i haven't "rasmikan" that place, and i wanted to, you know, share it with him first before i share it here in this blog. I'm sappy that way, i know.

Unfortunately i don't have a proper photo of the Grande Arche, as it's so humongous and i was not far from it enough to capture it as a whole.

So i've borrowed a photo from Wikipedia!

(en.wikipedia.org)
The above photo is of Grande Arche at night. I have no idea which fountain that is, but i do know this picture is taken from very, very far. Probably one station away from La Defense, which would be Esplanade De La Defense, because whenever we pass by the station, we would see Grande Arche in all of its glory.

Actually, come to think of it, we might be able to see Grande Arche fully as we go up the escalator from station La Defense, so maybe i'll snap a photo next time.

The roads in Paris is fantastically uniformed; all straight lines. Very neat. Arc De Triomphe is actually straight ahead of Grande Arche. You can actually see Arc De Triomphe from Grande Arche.

The photo below is from my A Little Tour Around Our Neighbourhood post. I've highlighted where exactly Grande Arche is.

Yes, that very tall building. That's Grande Arche.

From Wikipedia: "A great national design competition was launched in 1982 as the initiative of French president François MitterrandDanish architect Johann Otto von Spreckelsen (1929–1987) and Danish engineer Erik Reitzel designed the winning entry to be a 20th-century version of the Arc de Triomphe: a monument to humanity and humanitarian ideals rather than military victories."

Pretty neat eh? Grande Arche is also sort of a tourist attraction, and i think it also works as an office. Not too sure.

So one sunny afternoon, Shah and i decided to have lunch on the steps of Grande Arche, as we've seen many locals doing so. And it does look like loads of fun, and we wanted to join in!

We went to a halal burger joint in Le Quatre Temps and get our burger sets. Yes, there is a halal burger place nearby, yippee! Shah was so excited, because he said it's our McDonald's here. Obviously there are the real McDonalds around here, loads of them, but the meat burgers are not halal.

We went to the topmost step to eat our lunch. It was a very sunny day, and many people were on the steps.

If you click on the photo, it will be maximised, and you CAN see Arc De Triomphe at the very end, in the middle. Squint real hard, it really is there. The tiny archy thing that stands out in the middle. Straight ahead. Amazing!

Shah was really happy (and looking supercute as always) because his burger tasted almost like Big Mac. He loves his Big Macs!
Mine is a simple cheeseburger
The white "tent" is Cnit, the mall; Shah devouring his "Big Mac"

More people about; Le Quatre Temps is the mall on the right

Behind us:

One good advice i wish someone had given us: WEAR SUNSCREEN. My cheekbones got sunburned after this. Especially my right cheek. Like, they became slightly wrinkly on that area, and they were a little pedih also. Shah did tell me the UV rays here is stronger or whatever than in Malaysia, but we both still didn't bother to wear sunscreen. Bad move. For me, especially; Shah was all OK, thank Allah.

Another picture from my A Little Tour Around Our Neighbourhood post. We sat more towards the middle, but yeh, those are the steps of Grande Arche
I said to Shah, "Yeh, we aren't doing this again." But nah, i might just do it again, WITH SUNSCREEN NEXT TIME, as it was really nice to hang out there anyway, and eat or have a good talk (especially good because you can say whatever in Bahasa Malaysia and there's zero chance someone could understand it).

SO much fun! Even with the sunburn! It was really lovely to go on a lunch date with Sheh. I'm even more convinced that staying at where we are staying is the best thing to do.

Until my next one!
